“Thor” builds retardant line in Australia

Known in the United States as Air Tanker 132 and down under as “Thor”, it is seen in this video posted by the New South Wales Rural Fire Service building retardant line out ahead of the Terraborra North Fire in the Hawkesbury local government area.

  1. Interesting video. Whatever the tactical objective is, it does appear that the rebirth of the Global Supertankers 747 may have a place in fire aviation? Six or seven loads of retardant (3000-4000 gallons) plus flight time per sortie to accomplish the same objective as the 747. What does the math look like? Building retardant line is time sensitive. The duration of retardant hydration (four to six hours) is paramount to accomplishing the task. Any portion of the retardant line allowing the fire to burn through will defeat the tactical objective.
